Eliot, Thomas Stearns (1888–1965), poet, critic, and publisher, was born on 26 September 1888 at 2635 Locust Street, St Louis, Missouri, USA, the youngest of the seven children of Henry Ware Eliot (1843–1919) and Charlotte Champe Stearns (1843–1929), into an American family that took pains to impress on him the importance of its history and achievement. Thomas Stearns Eliot was awarded the 1948 Nobel Prize in literature, "for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry". Died of emphysema in London on January 4, 1965. His ashes, as per his wishes, are laid in the Church of San Michele in East Coker, the village from which Eliot's ancestors immigrated to America: a small plaque commemorates him. T. S. Eliot.
